Castlebar Town Council are preparing to publish new draft parking bye laws to go hand in hand with the rejuvenation works in the middle of the town. As part of the draft, the parking for taxis on Main Street in the town will be reduced to three spaces during the day on the east side of the street beside Parsons shops with extra spaces becoming taxi spaces in the evening time.

Durcan walks out of town council meeting over lack of prayer

Independent Castlebar town councillor Frank Durcan walked out at the start of a special meeting of the local authority after no prayer was said out loud this week. Only a matter of weeks ago at the May monthly meeting of the local authority, the members voted on a number of protocol issues for the council, one of those included the saying of a prayer before the meeting. At the May meeting the saying of either a Hail Mary or Our Father along with a Glory Be to the Father was passed by four votes to three in the chamber and the protocol arrangements were then passed fully at the ordinary June monthly meeting of the council.

Kilcoyne disappointed with turnout for special meeting

Independent Castlebar town councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he was disappointed with the turn out of councillors for what he described as “one of the most important issues for this council to deal with” this week. The council this week held a special meeting to discuss and amend the Draft Anti Social Behaviour Strategy 2010-2014 for Castlebar. The meeting was attend by only five of the nine members for the majority of the meeting, with it taking place with only four members present for a period of time also. Those members present were Mayor Ger Deere, councillors Harry Barrett, Blackie Gavin, Therese Ruane, and Michael Kilcoyne. Independent councillor Frank Durcan left the meeting before it began in protest, after no prayer was said at its outset.

It emerged at the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council that the local authority spent almost €2,000 each week last year on legal fees.

Councillors to stake out kebab shop

The issue of a takeaway restaurant on New Antrim Street, Castlebar, operating without planning permission took a comedic twist at the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue of the business still operating as a takeaway outside the hours permitted in its planning permission. Town Engineer Sean Higgins informed the meeting that he had attended the area outside of his normal working hours to see if it was breaking the terms of its planning permission and was awaiting CCTV footage from the gardaí so he could move ahead with proceedings.

Gradient not changed on Castle Street footpath, town council told

The issue of the gradient on the new footpath on Castle Street was raised at the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne told the meeting that he had representations about the gradient on the footpath changing. Cllr Frank Durcan also told the meeting it had been changed and made steeper and would be very difficult for someone to get up the hill with a wheelchair. However town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting, “The gradient hasn’t changed at all, the road has been raised all right but the gradient hasn’t change. There is a strict formula that is used in relation to where the entrance to the doorways in the shop and houses are and that hasn’t changed.”

Planning permission enforcement delays annoys councillors

The issue of a takeaway restaurant in Castlebar operating outside the remit of its planning permission raised its head again at the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue as there was an application on the planning list for the retention planning permission for a premises on New Antrim Street, Castlebar. Cllr Kilcoyne queried what was the situation with the application; acting town clerk Nora Coyne told the meeting that the application had been refused.
